When I tell people, I am a junior high principal; inevitably, I receive words of sympathy or condolences. My response to this often surprises when I say;” I have the best job in the world!” Many people assume that working with teenagers is difficult. While it can be challenging, it is also rewarding, inspirational, exciting and fun. Every day at the junior high is an adventure.
We are excited for the upcoming school year at Preston Jr. High. Some of the new additions to next year’s schedule include two new elective offerings, Cultural Creativity and Coding. Cultural Creativity will give students the opportunity to explore different cultures and art forms from all over the world. Coding will allow students to go hands-on with new technology and to learn basic computer programming.
Additionally, we will be piloting a 1:1 tech program with the sixth grade class that will help students develop 21st century skills. We have added a daily Tribe Time/Study Hall period to help students manage their homework, connect with an adult advocate, and focus on the four C’s of character, career, conditioning and community. We have also extended our lunch period to allow students more time for nutrition and to socialize.
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all parents to become involved in education. We welcome you to visit, sit in on a class, meet with teachers, talk to administration, or simply join your student for lunch. As members of this community, we want you to feel welcome on our campus and to be part of your student’s junior high experience.
